The University of Žilina (UNIZA) is one of the leading Slovak universities with a long tradition, a professional background and a modern approach to education and research. During more than 70 years of its existence, the university has developed into a significant centre of education, science, research and innovation in the fields of transport, technology, information and communication technologies, mechanical engineering, management, security and social sciences.
UNIZA has 6 faculties – Faculty of Operation and Economics of Transport and Communications, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Security Engineering and Faculty of Management Science and Informatics.
The university also has the following workplaces: the Institute of High Mountain Biology, the Institute of Mediamatics and Cultural Heritage, the Institute of Physical Education, the Institute of Forensic Research and Education, the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, the Institute of Lifelong Learning, the Institute of Competitiveness and Innovations, and the Aviation Training and Educational Centre. The goal of the university's competitiveness was achieved by gradually supplementing the university's and its laboratories' state-of-the-art equipment through projects that resulted in the creation of 15 scientific research centres and 2 research workplaces – the University Science Park and the Research Centre. Both centres provide conditions for incubators of new companies and support for the region.
It currently educates almost 7,800 students in 203 accredited study programmes at all levels of higher education. To date, it has educated more than 95,000 graduates who are recognised experts at home and abroad.
In the field of science and research, the University of Žilina is involved in solving almost 200 domestic and 65 foreign scientific projects and organises dozens of professional and scientific events every year. Cooperation with foreign universities and institutions is crucial for our university. It has developed partnerships in more than 50 countries around the world, including the USA, Canada, Brazil, Japan, China and South Africa. UNIZA is one of the most active Slovak universities in the Erasmus+ programme and is a member of important international organisations such as EUA, Magna Charta Universitatum, IGIP, ECTRI, FEHRL and Eurosis. As a member of the PIONEER European Universities alliance, it works with partners across Europe to shape the future of inclusive, sustainable and resilient cities by connecting education, research, innovation and practice.
UNIZA regularly ranks in prestigious international university rankings and has long been among the best-rated universities in Slovakia. UNIZA graduates are in high demand on the job market, as confirmed by independent employer satisfaction rankings.
