The Faculty of Management at the University of Zilina was established in July 1990 by decision of the Academic Senate. The original academic community was formed with students from the branch Cybernetic in Transport and Communications. In 1993 the new branch Management and Information Systems was created, and in 1996 the name changed to Faculty of Management Science and Informatics. This name most appropriately reflects the importance of information technology in the faculty’s profile and orientation. The faculty primarily specializes in management of extensive system activities, which include problems of managing and optimizing the transfer of products, passengers and information. The department also specializes in the design of integrated interactive information systems for decision-making support including economic connections and technical background. The faculty focuses on management, information and transport systems from small, medium and large-sized networks. Faculty goals require mathematical knowledge. Therefore, the faculty includes applied mathematics and designing mathematical models as a basis for algorithmic information, decision-making processes and their optimization.

The faculty divides the educational program into the following parts:

Bachelor’s Degree – a three-year study for high school graduates. Students can choose this study either immediately at the beginning or during the progress of their study. Graduates obtain the title “Bachelor” (Bc.), and after completion they can continue into the engineer program.

Master’s Degree – a five-year study for high school graduates. The study ends with a state exam and a defense of diploma thesis. Graduates obtain the academic title “Engineer” (M.Sc.).

Postgraduate Degree – the study for engineer graduates who decide to obtain a qualification needed for their future scientific work. The study lasts three years (in a daily form) and finishes with a defense of dissertation. The graduate obtains the scientific academic title “Philosophy Doctor” (Ph.D.).

Continuing Education – the study is intended to increase knowledge in one of the branches related to the faculty’s orientation. Language and re-qualification courses are organized in this form, and the faculty issues a certificate to the student.

The faculty offers study two courses of study:

Information and Management Systems

This form enables students to receive a university education in scientific and specialized branches, which relate to the management of large systems. The processes in extensive systems are controlled by various physical and economic rules and technical means for managing those processes, which are primarily represented by computers. Gradates are future experts of transport and communication; designing, managing and securing information and management systems in banks, government, tourism, building information systems of cities and regions, modeling and designing their infrastructures, predicting their evolution, etc. During the first two years students are without a specialization and study together. After the first two years they can choose from the following specializations:

Applied Informatics,
Management,
Information and Control Technique

Applied Mathematics

Graduates can work at economic or technical universities, scientific and research institutions or in developing centers of large companies and consulting services. They can also continue in economic, technical and theoretical mathematical postgraduate study. After two years the students can choose one of following orientations:

Economical specialization. Physical-Technical specialization
